Key Takeaways
  • Geometry of Markets: Harmonic patterns assume that price patterns repeat due to human psychology, often adhering to Fibonacci ratios.
  • Precision: Unlike general "support areas," harmonics give exact entry, stop, and target prices.
  • The Big 4: Gartley, Bat, Butterfly, and Crab are the most reliable patterns.
  • Contrarian: Most harmonic patterns are reversal patterns—buying when others are selling (and vice versa).
  • Automated Help: Spotting these by eye is hard. Use indicators to draw them for you.

What Are Harmonic Patterns?

Harmonic trading combines geometric price patterns with Fibonacci numbers to define precise turning points.

The core idea is: "History repeats itself." The same X-A-B-C-D structures that worked in 1935 (when H.M. Gartley discovered them) still work in 2026.

The Gartley Pattern

The "Granddaddy" of harmonics. It looks like an "M" (for bullish) or "W" (for bearish).

Ratio Rules:
  • Move AB should range 61.8% of XA.
  • Move BC should be 38.2% or 88.6% of AB.
  • The D Point (Entry): Should be exactly 78.6% retracement of XA.

The Bat Pattern

Discovered by Scott Carney. It is similar to the Gartley but deeper.

  • Key Feature: The "D" point (reversal zone) is at the 88.6% Fibonacci retracement of XA.
  • Accuracy: The Bat is considered one of the most accurate patterns in forex.

The Butterfly Pattern

This is an "Extension" pattern. Unlike the Gartley/Bat where point D is inside the XA leg, the Butterfly's D point extends beyond X (making a new Low or High).

The D Point: 127.2% extension of the XA leg. This is often where traders get stopped out (the "Head fake") before the market reverses. The Butterfly catches this exact bottom/top.

How to Trade Them

Do not trade blindly just because a pattern forms. You need the PRZ (Potential Reversal Zone).

The Checklist:

  1. Form: Does the pattern match the Fib ratios? (Use a scanner).
  2. Context: Is the "D" point at a key Support/Resistance level?
  3. Trigger: Wait for a slowing of momentum (small candles) at point D.
  4. Stop Loss: Just beyond the "X" point (for Gartley/Bat) or beyond the 161.8% extension (for Butterfly).
  5. Target: Target 1 is the "B" point. Target 2 is the "C" point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are harmonic patterns reliable?

When drawn correctly, yes (60-70% win rate). The problem is subjectivity—two traders might draw slightly different patterns.

Do I need to memorize the ratios?

No. Most modern trading platforms (TradingView, MT4) have "Harmonic Indicators" that auto-draw the patterns and label the ratios for you.

What is the best timeframe?

Harmonics work on all timeframes, but they are most powerful on H1, H4, and Daily charts. M5/M15 patterns fail often due to noise.

Is it trend following or reversal?

Primarily reversal. You are trying to pick the exact top or bottom of a correction or a new trend leg.

Can I code this into a robot?

Yes, "ZUP" indicators and Harmonic EAs are very popular because the rules are mathematical and precise.
